Ports - The Environmental Challenge

PIANC Australia and AAPMA will be hosting a workshop to discuss some of the major issues that face Ports in Australia.  To be held in Melbourne at the Crown Promenade Hotel the workshop will allow participants to stay on and participate in the Coasts and Ports Conference that commences on 18 July 2007 to 20 July at the same venue.

The Workshop will consist of lead international and Australian speakers followed by rigorous workshop discussion.  The workshop will commence at 1100 on 16 July 2007, allowing most participants to fly to Melbourne on the Monday morning and will cover:

  1. Environmental management
  2. Community Perceptions (including urban encroachment and land sea interface)

The cost of the workshop includes lunches, morning and afternoon teas and dinner at an external restaurant on the Monday evening.

Eric Cyrille Van den Eede
General Manager of the agency Waterwegen en Zeekanaal NV (Brussells) and President of PIANC

Eric Cyrille Van den Eede holds the positions of General Manager of the agency Waterwegen en Zeekanaal NV (waterways and sea canal) and President of PIANC (Navigation, Ports, Waterways). He is a Civil Engineer and has held the position of project engineer at the 1st directorate of the Scheldt basin of the administration for waterways Ghent; director of the directorate for ports of the administration for waterways and maritime affairs Brussels responsible for ports, environment and foreign affairs; head of the division of Upper-Scheldt for the administration of waterways and maritime affairs in Ghent. Currently he is the General Manager of the agency Waterwegen en Zeekanaal NV, an agency with some 900 employees, responsible for the management of about 1000 kilometres of waterways in the Scheldt basin in Flanders (Belgium).

 

Todd S. Bridges, Ph.D.

Dr. Bridges is the Senior Scientist for Environmental Sciences and Director of the Center for Contaminated Sediments (CCS) at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, in Vicksburg, MS. Since beginning his career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Waterways Experiment Station in 1992 his areas of research activity have concerned the bioavailability and toxicology of sediment-associated contaminants, the development of methods and models for use in risk assessment, developing innovative sediment management technologies, and advancing the use of decision analysis methods for environmental management. In addition to his research activity as a principle investigator, Dr. Bridges also serves as the Program Manager of the Dredging Operations Environmental Research (DOER) program, one of the Corps largest R&D programs, where he directs the execution of more than $5 million in research annually. He has chaired international working groups within the Scientific Group of the London Convention and the International Navigation Association. Dr. Bridges is an editor for Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management and is an active member of several professional organizations. Over the last 10 years Dr. Bridges has published numerous papers and book chapters in the fields of toxicology, environmental risk assessment, and contaminated sediment management. He received his B.A. (1985) and M.A. (1988) in Biology/Zoology from California State University , Fresno and his Ph.D. (1992) in Biological Oceanography at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Bridges' keynote speech at the conference will focus on the application of risk principles, concepts and methods in the management of navigation infrastructure. He will discuss the application of risk assessment to dredging operations, sediment management, and environmental management and the use of such assessments to make risk-informed management decisions.
